Hyundai Unveils BlueOn Electric Vehicle; Targeting Manufacturing 2,500 Units Per Year By 2012

Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled the company’s—and Korea’s—first full-speed electric vehicle (FSEV), named BlueOn. Hyundai invested a total of about 40 billion won (US$32 million) over a one-year period to create BlueOn, which is based on Hyundai’s small hatchback, i10. The electric version of i10 was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2009. (Earlier post.)

Valence Technology, Wrightbus Sign Multi-Year Li-ion Battery Supply Agreement

Valence Technology, Inc. has signed a multi-year supply agreement with Wrightbus, the United Kingdom’s leading independent supplier of hybrid buses for public transportation systems. Building on a relationship between the parties since 2005, this agreement establishes Valence Technology as the battery supplier of choice for Wrightbus’ future hybrid product range.

AeroVironment Home EV Charging Station Receives Underwriters Laboratories Listing

AeroVironment (AV) has received Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listing for its EV home charging station (EVSE-RS). The home charging station is one element of AV’s range of charging solution, which includes convenience and fast charging systems for multi-unit housing, retail establishments, public locations, fleet operations, automotive dealerships, roadside assistance, and options to interface with the smart grid and smart home.

Xcel Energy and Customer Coalition To Be Among First Users of Electric Transit Connect

Xcel Energy and a coalition of its customers have been selected to be among the first in the country to receive the all-electric Ford Transit Connect Electric commercial van. Azure Dynamics Corp. has named Xcel Energy to its “Lead Customer” program to receive a total of 13 vans.

 

An initial van will be delivered in late 2010 with the remaining 12 vans scheduled for delivery in 2011. Ford Transit Connect Electric is a collaborative effort between Ford Motor Company and Azure.

Southern California Edison has launched an online Plug-in Car Rate Assistant to help customers estimate the cost of fueling an electric vehicle and the impact on their electricity bill.

Mitsubishi Chemical Boosting Production of Li-ion Anode Materials by 130%

Mitsubishi Chemical will increase its production capacity of anode materials for rechargable lithium-ion batteries to 7,000 tons annually by next May from its current output level of 3,000 tons.

The company currently produces an annual 3,000 tons of anode materials at a facility in Kagawa Prefecture; output is already scheduled to increase to 5,000 tons in December. Mitsubishi will boost that by an additional 2,000 tons next May.

Frito-Lay to Deploy 21 Electric Delivery Trucks in 2010, 155 More in 2011

Frito-Lay will deploy 21 electric delivery trucks this year. The company projects it will roll out 155 additional trucks in 2011, making Frito-Lay the largest commercial fleet of all-electric trucks in North America. The trucks, designed by Smith Electric Vehicles, generate zero tailpipe emissions and operate for up to 100 miles on a single charge.

Coulomb Technologies Secures $15M in Series C Funding

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure company Coulomb Technologies has secured $15 million in Series C funding. Coulomb will use the funds to help accelerate product development of the ChargePoint Network, enhance customer support and drive sales.
